Clayton, Washington

Four and a half miles northwest of Deer Park - had at its heart a major brick factory.  Clayton's brick plant operated from 1907 to 1957.

The magnificent terra cotta work found in the Davenport Hotel (Spokane) came from the Clayton terra cotta plant, along with the bricks and pipes.  Several matching ram’s heads are a defining aspect of the décor. An additional ram’s head was created and now graces the Clayton School, now on the Washington State and National Historic Registers. The bull buffalo heads on the Monroe Street Bridge are also from Clayton.

An enormous American Bald Eagle that had perched on the crest of the Washington State Armory in Spokane, WA, for decades was created in Clayton as well. This art work is currently displayed at the Spokane International Airport in conjunction with Geiger Field and Fairchild Air Force Base and under the auspices of the Washington State National Guard.

Clayton School

A classic, two-story brick structure built in 1915, has recently been entirely restored and now on the Washington State and National Historic Registers.

The lone remaining ram's head from the Davenport Hotel project in 1914 hangs proudly over the entrance to the totally restored Clayton School. The restoration was spear-headed by the Clayton Historical Society, formed specifically to save this cherished building. The Clayton School now houses the Deer Park School District homeschooling enrichment program.
